A solo exhibition by Laura L Bell.
'Reminiscence Bump' focuses on the relationship between painting and photography; how we remember versus how a machine archives light. The works, with their hazy, soft quality, remove the sharpness and precision of camera-made images, emphasising the human touch in the act of painting. A physical remembering, a repossession of the memory, a questioning of the ability of the mind to recollect, against the mechanics of photography. The diaristic aspect of the photograph being stretched through the act of painting.
Concerned with the visual complexities posed by the transparency, symbolism and geometric structure of the window, 'Reminiscence Bump' reflects on the poetics of the bedroom. Black dominates the works, yet allows for spaces to be opened up. We see no detail but we know there is a place beyond the weight of darkness. The subject of the work emerges from the unknown, existing in the shadows, in places we can’t see.
