The Performance Studio: Bob Dickinson - Performance Art: From the Margins to the Mainstream

Over the past forty years performance art has emerged from an underground counter-cultural context to play a central role within contemporary art practice. In this talk Bob Dickinson will look at the work of several artists including: Joseph Beuys, Carolee Schneeman, Stuart Brisley, Allan Kaprow, Adrian Piper, Chris Burden, Marina Abramovic, Tania Bruguera, Ichi Ikeda, and Public Movement.

Bob Dickinson will show how performance has evolved through interactions between politics, environment, and DIY initiatives, and he will raise questions about the future of performance in an age of blockbuster gallery shows and demanding/compelling social media.

Bob Dickinson is a freelance writer and broadcaster, based in Manchester. He is a contributor to Art Monthly magazine and the online arts magazine Corridor 8, and has written for The Guardian, New Musical Express, The Observer, Architectural Review, and City Fun fanzine. He regularly produces documentary features for BBC Radio 4, recent examples of which include: Really Happening! – examining the history of the happening in art and The Body of Art- a history of the body in live art.
